The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2025 finally arrived in India, and Mumbai wasted no time showing why it deserved the stage. On opening day at the Royal Opera House, elite chess met atmosphere, drama, and decisive results. With 14 of the world’s top 15 players in action, Day 1 delivered exactly what the league promises no safe draws, constant tension, and moments that ripple far beyond the result sheets.

By the end of the day, the defending champions Triveni Continental Kings, the home favourites upGrad Mumba Masters, and Fyers American Gambits had all claimed victories. More importantly, the tone for the season was set: aggressive chess, emotional swings, and genuine spectacle.

Why the Global Chess League Feels Different

The Global Chess League is designed for spectators as much as purists. Each of the six franchises fields six players, including two women and one junior, ensuring variety on every board. Teams face each other twice during the league phase, with only the top two progressing to the final.

For 2025, organiser’s have added a subtle but important tweak a two-second increment after move 41. The intent is to preserve the chaos of rapid chess while reducing endings decided purely by flag falls.

Triveni Continental Kings 9–7 Alpine SG Pipers

The defending champions opened their title defence with a controlled yet dramatic victory. Wei Yi continued his excellent form by defeating Anish Giri, while Nino Batsiashvili handed Alpine their only point by overcoming Alexandra Kosteniuk.

Firouzja vs Caruana: The Moment That Lit Up Mumbai

For much of the game, the clash between Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana appeared balanced. One misstep, however, changed everything.

After 18…Rc8??, Firouzja launched a devastating kingside attack. The exchange sacrifice on f7 and queen penetration via g7 left Caruana’s king fatally exposed. Once the monarch stepped into the centre, the outcome felt inevitable.

It was a reminder that at his best, Firouzja remains one of the most dangerous attacking players in the world.

upGrad Mumba Masters 17–4 Ganges Grandmasters

The most dominant performance of Day 1 belonged to upGrad Mumba Masters. Playing in front of a home crowd, they dismantled Ganges Grandmasters from the opening phase onward.

Anand vs Vachier-Lagrave: Control from the Black Pieces

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave punished small inaccuracies from Viswanathan Anand, seizing the centre with 21…d5! and never relinquishing control. The conversion was clinical, drawing applause even from the neutral spectators.

Fyers American Gambits 8–5 PBG Alaskan Knights

The final match of the day was the tightest. Hikaru Nakamura and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju cancelled each other out on the top board, but IM Teodora Injac delivered the decisive win, pushing the American Gambits over the line.
